DEAR SOLDIER

I sit and read the letter  he sent me,

“Dear friend, whatever happens to me,

Please don’t forget me.  Your soldier’.

I watch as they carry the flag-draped coffin,

And listen as they fire the guns.

I whisper, “Dear soldier, you are not forgotten”.

I lay flowers at the bottom of the headstone,

One red rose, one white daisy, one blue lily.

It’s been years since he’s been gone but still,

I whisper, “Dear soldier, you are not forgotten”.
