Seeking Revenge?

Has someone done something to irritate you or cause you pain?  Are you just waiting for the chance to return the favor?  Dr Gerald Mann says ‘the two most popular responses to hurt are revenge and resentment’.  If this is your favorite response – read on!

In taking revenge,
a man is but even with his enemy;
but in passing it over,
he is superior.
- Francis Bacon

Is it in your best interest, or the best use of your time and energy on this effort?  Dr. Mann goes on to say, ‘each of us has been or will be maimed by someone else, and nothing robs us of inner peace like resentment and revenge’.  Is it worth losing your inner peace, just to gain revenge for the hurt someone caused you?  Will you be happier when get your revenge?   It will be a shallow victory and the feelings of success will be short lived.  People are going to hurt you and irritate you, that’s life.  But do you really need to make revenge one of your goals?

Little, vicious minds abound
with anger and revenge,
and are incapable of feeling
the pleasure of forgiving their enemies.
- Earl of Chesterfield

I read somewhere that ‘its hard to get ahead when you are trying to get even’.  You have more pressing things to do than to be spending your time trying to get even with someone.  'Invest' this time by improving yourself.  Work on your relationships, polish up your job skills, gain new skills, enjoy the pleasures of life.  These are victories that will live long in your heart and soul, improve your self-esteem and help to create a better person.

- Joe Freeman

Courage is always greatest when blended with meekness;
intellectual ability is most admired when it sparkles in the setting of modest self-distrust;
and never does the human soul appear so strong
as when it foregoes revenge and dares to forgive any injury.
