What Do You Want?
Greed does
not exist in a culture, an economic system,
or era in history any more than a fish exists in an encyclopedia.
Greed lives in the heart of individual human beings.
- Dr Timothy Miller
Dr.
Miller points out in his book 'How To Want What You Have', that it is human
nature to want 'More'. More money, more cars, bigger cars, bigger
homes.
What do you really want? Have you thought about it lately, or are you busy trying to get 'it'. Will you be happier when you get 'it'.
For example, if you are working excessive hours to advance your career in order to give your family everything you think they want, but you never see them, you may need to re-examine your motives and goals.
Check with your family and be sure they want the same thing. If they do, great. However they may be willing to live in a smaller house, drive less expensive cars and take cheaper vacations if they get to have more time with you.
Wanting more is not always bad - unless it is for the wrong reason. So double check your reasons.
One
of Dr. Millers suggestions for learning how to want what you have is:
'Gratitude' - The intention to count
your blessings everyday, every minute, while avoiding, whenever possible, the
belief that you need or deserve different circumstances.
- Joe Freeman
Twenty years
from now you will be more disappointed
by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did.
- Mark Twain
