Why Aren’t You Happy?

Do you wish you were happier?  Have you thought about what it would be like to be happy all the time?  George Bernard Shaw said ‘a lifetime of happiness?  No man could bear it: it would be hell on earth’.

Why can’t you be happy 24 x 7?  Rachel Field says ‘too much good fortune can make you smug and unaware. Happiness should be like an oasis, the greener for the desert that surrounds it’.  Can you have too much good fortune (happiness)?

Happiness is having a large,
loving, caring, close-knit family
in another city.
- George Burns

Constant happiness implies that you never encounter any difficult issues, difficult people, lost opportunities, lost loves, death of family, etc.  If you are always happy, where will you get the opportunity to grow as a person?  How will you learn to handle tough situations?  Life was not meant to be a 24 x 7 party.  Sooner or later you will encounter some tough times.

This very moment is a seed
from which the flowers of
tomorrow's happiness grow.
– Margaret Lindsey

Stop cursing the problems in your life.  Use these problems to grow as a person.  Rejoice in the opportunity to better your life through improving yourself.  Oscar Levant says ‘happiness isn't something you experience; it's something you remember’.  This means as you look back at the problems you have faced and resolved, you will have ‘happy memories’ of the past, even though they were stressful at the time.

- Joe Freeman

The happiness of the bee and the dolphin is to exist.
For man it is to know that and to wonder at it.

- Jacques-Yves Cousteau
